Let's Talk about Herpes

STD's can be a touchy subject in this industry, one full of stigma but also genuine concern from both workers and punters.

Today I want to talk about Herpes (HHV, HSV)

Believe it or not, if you're sexually active chances are you already have it. it's estimated up to 80% of the Aus population has this virus, most cases go unnoticed unless a major outbreak happens. You can contract Herpes both HHV and HSV1 both around your mouth and your genitals. That means if someone has a mouth cold sore they can transfer this to your genitals if you engage in natural Cunnilingus (going down on a woman) or Fellatio (going down on a dude.)

I've had a boyfriend with genital herpes, when an outbreak occurred we would refrain from sexual activity and he would take antivirals. Once the outbreak was gone we would engage in sexual activity as normal. We were together for two years and I did not contract herpes around my pussy. Communication and knowledge on sexual health is important, I do know there is still risk of Herpes transfer through a process called shedding and this is something I learned about by actually looking it up and educating myself on the topic. I encourage any sexually active person to brush up on their knowledge of STD's - this way you know the facts and how to work around them.

It's possible for Herpes to be transferred literally at birth, so don't think that just because someone has it this came from being sexually irresponsible.

My ex boyfriends first outbreak came after a stressful event, he ended up tracing contracting it back to a woman he'd slept with almost a year before. Don't jump the gun and blame your last sexual partner for it. It could be anyone.

If you believe you have the herpes virus speak to your GP, be sexual responsible and educate yourself. If you have an outbreak be courteous of us workers, inform us. We might be able to offer a covered massage service etc as an alternative to full service.

Have fun, be safe!

Yes good advise. Hopefully as the percentage of people in general who are carrying the Virus is high and would obviously also include sex workers then hopefully when they have an outbreak they also take care .

This is an interesting article https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC2564694/ They only did genital herpes because of cost and oral herpes results aren’t very interesting, because just about everyone has it.

Interesting is that historically herpes increases with age because you can’t get rid of it. What you are seeing is that younger generations are having a lot more sex than they used to so are well ahead. Todays teenagers will end up in their seventies with over 20% with genital herpes. If I ever end up in a nursing home it is going to be all bareback, so if I haven’t got it, I will.

Interesting from their literature search is that female sex workers have a prevalence of genital herpes from 74% to 98% in different studies. Not surprising. Many sex workers already had varied sex lives, and it is probably difficult not to contract herpes even with condoms. Having the WL switch gloves several time would wreck the mood.

Definitely just as important for workers to take care too x

Very useful information! Thanks for that!

As herpes is most contagious about 3 days before an outbreak (often associated with an itching or burning sensation) there is a high chance that sex workers and members of the public infected with the herpes virus that experience regular outbreaks will pass it on to sexual partners.

If provided beforehand with the information that a woman suffers herpes outbreaks regularly I for one would not choose to have sex or an ongoing relationship with that person.

I think it is morally preferable that anyone infected with the herpes virus, HPV virus or HIV virus tell a potential sexual partner (or punter) beforehand and allow them to choose their level of risk.

Similarly if you have any of these viruses you should really think twice about punting and should certainly let the sex worker know beforehand so she can assess what activities if any she may be comfortable with.

I very much doubt a sex worker would admit to having the virus.

That would potentially be the end if her career in the industry.

If I knew I would not want to have sex with her.
On the other hand many have it and you won’t know even if you catch it due to the fact you have multiple sex worker / sexual encounters.

Even though more than a quarter would have antibodies to genital herpes.

Both my doctor and I were surprised that I don't have antibodies to either HSV, especially given my mother had recurrent cold sores.Me, my dad and my brothers and sisters never had cold sores. So I'm thinking that we all have my dad's genetics, and that the antibody test isn't perfect. We have low level of antibodies and the test just doesn't pick it up. Most people who have the antibodies don't recall ever having had a lesion. Not having a lesion doesn't mean that you aren't infectious, virus can still be appearing in things like your mouth, vagina, if you've got one, and urethra.

I had my first cold sore, before I was sexually active, kissed anyone, or even knew what it was.

"That means if someone has a mouth cold sore they can transfer this to your genitals if you engage in natural Cunnilingus (going down on a woman) or Fellatio (going down on a dude.)"

I have looked this up and it's a different virus downstairs, to upstairs. I don't know how easily it transmit. But I would refrain from any sexual activity, if I had any cold sore symptoms.

"HSV-1 usually causes oral herpes, and HSV-2 usually causes genital herpes — each strain prefers to live on its favorite area. But it's totally possible for both types of herpes simplex to infect either area. For example, you can get HSV-1 on your genitals if someone with a cold sore on their lips gives you oral sex."

The few times I have had a cold sore over the years, my lips were very dry and I was under a certain amount of stress. I can feel a tingling feeling before an outbreak. Lip balm, keeping out of the sun and staying calm, certainly helps to keep it away.

There's oral antiviral drugs available over the counter that stop and prevent herpes outbreaks in those infected with the virus. The drugs probably mess with your natural immune system though. Wls could easily take the drugs while working to protect customers. Also an outbreak would lead to loss of income and potentially ruin reputation....so drugs are a good option.

After my first bbbj I noticed a red dot on my cock, I spent the whole day thinking I had herpes, so I researched the shit out of it....about 8 hours later I finally had the courage to give myself a thorough examination....turns out it was a bit of red lint off of my bath towel 🤣... phew

Had a developing itch on the groin a little while ago. Normal GP suspected it was skin infection - apparently he doesn't believe I wash up properly. Visited a health clinic after the antibacterial didn't improve the situation. Doctor prescribed me with Vancyclovir or some other one which improved the situation. Upsetting but could have been a lot worse. Long story short, best to see a sexual health clinic. No one judges, and if you're worried, wear a face mask.

I had a girlfriend way back (over 25 years ago) who had it, and let me know before we had sex. It was pretty safe when she didn't have a flare up (which was a rare occurrence). I got myself tested regularly and still do. She was terrified to tell me, but was glad she did and I educated myself up on it. Still, very glad I did not get it!

Their statement about high percentages of sex workers with it is a bit misleading because the two studies are in Kinshasa and Thailand, assume it is quite a bit lower here

I should have read the whole paper, but it would be lower here.  You can find other studies like https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC2870498/ and it isn't that much lower in the UK. One interesting result is that it seems to increase with increasing working time as a sex worker. There are things I'm not surprised about. Rates of genital herpes were higher in those tested in the period 85-90, when many of the women would have been working prior to 85, which is a time when bareback sex was much more likely with sex workers.

HSV2 went from 72% to 44% by 90s so might be lower now, because it's tested so rarely it is hard to track anyway

Yeah I often point out to my partners that Condoms don't necessarily protect from herpes, and even some STDs.  Condoms mainly prevent pregnancy and will provide protection for about 60% chance of STD  If you are seeing many girls and having some unprotected sex or BBBJ good idea to be checked regularly.
